LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School Red Raider girls varsity squad took control and kept Waimea from winning its first game of the season with a 2-1 win last night at Vidinha Stadium.
However, the Menehune boys took care of the Red Raiders with a 3-1 victory.
Waimea’s Tori Kagawa netted her first goal of the season for Waimea in the first half, but Kaua‘i’s Kristen Shim tied the match up at one apiece just before halftime.
In the second stanza, both teams stepped up on the defensive end, but Kaua‘i’s Megan Vento punched home the go-ahead goal for the win.
Kaua‘i is now 3-1 and moves a half game in front of the Warriors, who are 2-1.
The Waimea boys jumped ahead early and never looked back thanks to goals by Luke Tsuchiya, Kollin Morikawa, and Chad Thompson.
Joseph Mecham for Waimea came up with great defensive plays throughout the game.
Kaua‘i’s only goal was scored late in the second half by Danny Riggle.
The Menehune are now in first-place in the KIF boys standings with a 2-0-1.
Meanwhile, Kaua‘i now moves to 1-2-1. Kapa‘a sits in third-place with an 0-1-2 mark.
KIF soccer continues on December 29 with Kapa‘a visiting Hanapepe Ballpark for a JV only match against Waimea, starting at 4 p.m.
The next varsity game is on December 30, with Kapa‘a traveling to Hanapepe Ballpark to face the Menehune, starting at 4 p.m.
