LIHU‘E — “How ‘bout them Cowboys,” Koko Kaneali‘i, the public address announcer, yelled, as the Kaua‘i Cowboy’s smashed the visiting Kona Razorbacks squad Saturday, 24-14 at Vidinha Stadium.
The semi-final match up was controlled by the Cowboys, who were led by the steady quarterbacking of Drew Kamana‘o and the solid hands of Diego Fernandez, who scored four touchdowns for Kaua‘i.
The Cowboys drew first blood with a 70-yard bomb from Kamana‘o to Fernandez on the opening drive of the contest.
Kona answered with three minutes to go in the first with a one-yard run to tie the game at six a piece.
After a blazing return from Fernandez, which gave the Cowboys excellent field position, Keone Ah-Loo and Fernandez failed to hold on to the ball, which made the first quarter score, 6-6.
However, Kaua‘i went to the air again in the second period, as Terry Noice got into the scoring action, with a 22-yard TD catch from Kamana‘o.
A key Ipo Haumea interception stopped a crucial Kona drive to give the Cowboys a 12-6 advantage going into the halftime locker rooms.
Kaua‘i came out in the second half with the same intensity and put the game away with touchdowns from Fernandez.
In the other semi-final game, the Maui Stars, who is the number-one-seeded team in the Hawai‘i Football League Playoffs, destroyed the Pacific Iron Dogs, 53-6.
The wins by Kaua‘i and Maui sets up the showdown between the Stars and Cowboys for Tsunami Bowl XII on Saturday, 6:00 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium on Maui.
