Kaua‘i karate does well at Maui tourney
Clay Sasil and Cynthia Madden led the Kaua‘i contingent at the Festival of Kings Tournament held at the Westin Maui Resort recently.
Sasil and Madden won the men’s and women’s black belt division respectively.
Tiana Esaki and Shaylee Orial, both students from the Universal Karate School, took first and second in separate Kata (forms) division.
Esaki, Kapili Akana, Ray Shirai, Lee Yoshino, Arnie Yago, Julie Black, Elusha Wiess, Madelann Mejia, Merlito Mejia, and Rayan Oride also participated in the Kumite (fighting) division where they either won, or placed in their respective kumite division.
The event was hosted by Ted Tabura of California whose appearance attracted numerous karate fighters from the mainland, Tabura being known to have produced champion fighters. Tabura also brought over his top students to participate in the tournament.
Manintin leads Polomai‘ole win
KOLOA — Ku‘ulei Manintin allowed five runs on five Kalahalepakewai hits to lead Polomai‘ole to a 9-5 Saturday in the 18 Under Summer Softball League at the Koloa Park.
Manintin finished with seven walks with four strikeouts in the victory.
Dale Ann Perreira suffered the loss with nine runs allowed on nine hits while walking six and fanning one Polomai‘ole batter.
AJ Silva topped the Polomai‘ole bats along with Jenna Mercado and Chasa‘raw Labugen, Silva (3-5) picking a pair of singles and a double while stealing two bases, and RBI, and scoring once. Mercado (2-3) doubled and singled, scored twice, and stole a bag while Labugen (1-3) finished with a single, a stolen base, and crossed the plate three times.
Melissa Moreno and Moani Durant led Kalahalepakewai bats with Moreno (3-4) ending with three singles, three stolen bases, and scoring once. Durant (2-4) finished with a pair of singles, a stolen base, and scored once.
Polomai‘ole is defined as “Everything is all good,” while Kalahalepakewai represents Kalaheo, Lawai, Hanapepe, ‘Ele‘ele, Pakala, Kekaha, and Waimea.
In the girls 14 Under softball league, Na Koa of Kapa‘a will be traveling to the Waimea Canyon Park for a showdown against the Wes Syde Gurls of Waimea while Hokuala takes a trip to the Anne Knudsen Park to match up against Koloa this evening.
Both games start at 6 p.m.
Kekaha Pop Warner extends registration
The Kekaha Pop Warner Association will continue to accept registration for their Fall tackle football through Thursday, July 22 at the equipment shed at the Kekaha Ball Park.
Representatives from the association will be on hand between 5 and 6 p.m. to accept applications as well as answer questions.
Players and cheerleaders between the ages of 8 through 15 years are invited to participate.
