KALAHEO n Aaron Hesapene and Akeem Allen combined for 49 points to lead the Boys 19 Under Westside Klowns to a 64-41 win over ZZ Tuesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Hesapene finished with seven buckets from threepointland in his game-high 29 points with Allen adding 20 points and a strong performance underneath in their win.
KYBA coordinator Steven Matsumoto said the loss didn’t jeopardize ZZ’s top seed status because they had earlier beat Kapa‘a, the league’s second seed.
League standings as of July 10 had Kalaheo tied for second with Kapa‘a at 5-2, the Westside Klowns in fourth at 4-3. The Southside Boys (3-3), Lihu‘e (Medina) (2-5), Eastside Ballers (2-5), and Unlimited Construction (1-6) round out the list.
Playoffs for the boys begins Thursday night, July 15 at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center with the second seed going against the third seed starting at 7 p.m. and the top and fourth seeds battling starting at 8 p.m. to set up the championship series that takes place Saturday at Kapa‘a High School starting at 1 p.m.
Chad Barba finished with eight points followed by Jordan Rabot adding five, and a pair by Brendan McDaniels rounding out the WK effort.
Brandon Wong finished with 16 points to lead the ZZ effort with Bryan Domingo and Samuel Chung each adding six points. John Penn added five, Randy Vicoy came up with four second quarter points, and pairs from Micah Young and Garren Venzon closed the books.
Earlier in the evening, the Kapa‘a Gogo Girls needed a win to better their second seed status in the Girls 19 Under program, but that was denied by the Westside Hornets who took a 29-19 win behind Virginia Aguilar’s 13 points.
Aguilar posted 11 of the squad’s 13 first quarter points to jump ahead of Kapa‘a, 13-4 and continued to keep the margin throughout the night.
Cherisse Ponce, Natasha Acosta, and Ashley Vea each contributed four points each to the Hornets’ win that saw Chasen Sherman and Tori Kagawa each chip in a pair, and a digit by Lani Kanahele rounding out the victory. Coach Candace States kept the Gogo juice going with strong encouragement from the bench throughout their effort at trimming back the Hornets’ 9-point advantage. Samdi Makepa topped Kapa‘a’s offense with eight points followed by six points added by Brittney Carvalho who added four of her six in the final quarter.
Guard Brianne States finished with three and a pair by Joliann Arzadon rounded out the effort.
The third game of the evening went to the Southside boys, 57-47 over Kalaheo in boys 19-and-under action. Jeremy Manuel led Southside with 25 points and Tab Matsumoto netted 20 in the loss.
Meanwhile out in Kapa‘a, The Lihu‘e Raiders took care of Wailua, 19-15. Kennilyn Nakamura put up seven points for Wailua and Rachael Taira led the Raiders with 11 markers in a girls 19-and-under game.
The Kapa‘a Warriors and Unlimited Construction game went down to the wire with the Warriors getting the final and winning basket of the evening for a 28-27 victory. Mike Lindsey led Kapa‘a with 10 points and Warren Lee led Unlimited in the scoring department.
The Eastside Ballers controlled the third contest, with a 44-31 win over Lihu‘e (Medina).
Kaina Ka‘auwai put in 14 points to lead the Ballers and Brandon Ballesteros scored 11 points for Lihu‘e.
Natalie Mata outscored the Easide Gurlz all by herself, 26-25 on Monday at Kalaheo Gym, to give Da Malahinis (Kaumakani) a 70-25 win in girls 19-and-under action. Moani Durant came up with 16 points for Da Malahinis.
For Easide, Jennalyn Gomes and Teeana Valpoon scored nine and eight points, respectively.
In the second contest, Wailua was able to sneak past the Kaua‘i Fire Raiders, 26-22. Jennilyn Nakamura led Wailua with 11 markers and Sanoe Kelli‘inoi notched 10 points for the Raiders.
The 19-and-under boys match-up went to SSB (Southside Boys), 47-44, over the Eastside Ballers. Jeremy Manuel grabbed 21 points and Travis Bare followed with 17 for SSB.
The Ballers were led by Kaina Ka‘auwai.
The 19 U girls program has the Lihu‘e Raiders (4-1) in the top seed position as of July 10.
The Kapa‘a Gogo girls (3-1) follow in the second position, tying the Kaumakani Malahinis (3-1). The Westside Hornets (2-2) hold down fourth followed by Wailua (2-2), Kauai Fire Raiders (1-4), and the Eastside Gurlz (0-4). Playoffs for the Girls 19 Under begin Wednesday, July 21 at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
