WAILUA — One hundred twenty-one high school boy golfers from around the state have been gathering at the Wailua Golf Course in preparation for the 2004 HHSAA/David S. Ishii Foundation State Golf Championships that opens today with a shotgun start on both the first and tenth tees.
The 36-hole play will finish Thursday with winners being crowned in both individualist play as well as a team champion with scores being tallied from the best four of five team players.
KIF representatives include nine golfers with eight of the nine coming from the Kaua‘i Red Raiders who will attempt to duplicate the feat of their girls who took the girls team championships by 12 strokes over runner-up Waiakea.
Sean Ogawa from Kula School is the ninth KIF golfer who will be taking to the field from the No. 10 tee at 7:24 a.m. with Reyn Tanaka (Mid Pacific), Chad Yawata (Aiea), and Bryan Bangerter (King Kekaulike).
Layne Morita will be the first Kaua‘i golfer, leaving Tee No. 1 at 7:16 a.m. with Trent Kiyono (Baldwin), Ryan Nakao (King Kekaulike), and Casey Mori (Kealakehe).
