Martha W. Kapuniai
Martha W. Kapuniai of Waimea, died May 14, 2004, at Kauai Care Center at the age of 78.
Born May 18, 1925, on O‘ahu, she was a pineapple cannery employee and planter for a sugar plantation.
She is survived by two daughters: Shirley Ann (Owen) Kauahi and Yvonne Woaala Pascua; one son: Lawrence Kalani (Rhonda) Kapuniai, Jr. and two siblings: Judy Kama and Noah Kekahuna; numerous nieces, and nephews; 16 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday, May 22, at St. Joseph’s Church in Kaumakani with Memorial Mass celebrated at 10 a.m.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Katherine Juanita Rivera
Katherine Juanita Rivera of Anahola died May 15, 2004, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 73.
A retired cook for Coco Palms, she was born Dec. 9, 1930, on Kaua‘i.
She is survived by daughter: Carmela (Lance) Nishihara; three sons: Frank “Kachi” (Joyleen) Rivera, Wayne (Liane) Rivera and Haku (Lei) Rivera; four sisters: Jennie (Blake) Pereira, Alice O’Rilley, Alvina Mills and Priscilla (Mike) Magallanes; one brother: Castro (Irene) Lovell; 11 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa with service to begin at 11 a.m. followed by burial at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Buichi Yamasaki
Buichi Yamasaki died on May 7, 2004 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 97.
He was born in Lawa‘i on Jan. 12, 1907 and lived most of his life on Kaua‘i, except when he was off to school at Mid Pacific Institute in Honolulu. He was the manager-owner of Kauai Soda Company which bottled Coca Cola, 7-up and soft drinks for the island. The company also made and distributed Meadow Gold ice cream. The company was later sold to the Coca Cola Company now located in the Lihue Industrial Center. He introduced Coca Cola to Kaua‘i, and always said, “The secret to long life is to drink one Coke a day.” He was also an avid golfer for many years and played until he was 93 years old when pneumonia slowed him down. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred.
He is survived by three children: Ann Berman of Honolulu, Lois Kusano of Camarillo, Calif. and Calvin Yamasaki of Waipahu. He is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be on May 24, at the Lihue Christian Church; with visitation at 3:30 p.m. and the service at 4 p.m. followed by a private family burial on May 25, 2004 at the Kauai Memorial Gardens. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted. Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
James Everett Barker
James Everett Barker died Jan. 10, 2004, at Palisades General Hospital, North Bergen, N.J. at the age of 81.
Born in up-state New York on May 20, 1922, to Edith Holcomb and Everett J. Barker, he ran a limousine service in Miami for 35 years.
He is survived by a son, Andrew; two daughters: Jamie (John) Gilleran of Kapa‘a, Patricia (John) Rongo of New York; and his companion, Grace Danchise, two aunts, Beatrice Goodfellow and Bernice Mylford; ex-wife Florence Close and six grandchildren.
He was a Navy and Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, and spent three years in Honolulu during duty.
Arrangements of his ashes will be at St. Michael’s and All Angels. Services were private at charles W. Scheurie Funeral Home in West New York.
Domingo Bala
Domingo Fernandez Bala of Kaumakani, died at his home on May 11, 2004, at the age of 83.
Born May 30, 1920, in the Philippines, he was an irrigator.
He is survived by his wife: Nemesia B. Bala of Kaumakani; one stepdaughter: Mira Pa Kapili of Honolulu and one niece: Leonida Bala.
Family and friends may call on Friday, May 21, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa from 6 to 9 p.m. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, May 22, at ‘Ele‘ele Sacred Hearts Church from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Hanapepe Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
