WAILUA – The day started wet and rainy at the prestine Waliua Golf Course, but as the sun fought its way through the clouds by mid-morning, the 2004 HHSAA/David S. Ishii Foundation Girls Golf Championship featured a hall of league champions at the top when it was all said and done.
OIA champ Britney Choy from Leilehua and ILH title holder, Mari Chun from Kamehameha are the front runners after round one, both shooting one-over-par 73s.
Close behind at two-over par 74 are BIIF champ, Waiakea’s Amanda Wilson and Kaua‘i’s Jennie Pleas.
Wilson and Chun blistered the front nine, shooting one-under-par 35 a piece to lead the pack in that category.
Lindsey Hong of Punahou and Kaua‘i’s Miki Ueoka followed by carding three-over-par 75s.
Meanwhile, Hilo’s Whitney Ueno managed to shoot a four-over-par 76 with 38 on the back and front.
Kelly Nakashima of Baldwin had a rough time with the back nine, but she shot well enough on the front nine to give her a five-over-par 77 at the conclusion of the first round.
Defending HHSAA champion, Kira Murashige, who transferred back from Hilo to Waiakea, her original school, for her senior year tied for 29th place at 11-over-par 83.
Kaua‘i High School took a commanding first round lead with a total of 229, followed by Punahou at 234, Hilo and Waiakea both with a 236, and Moanalua at 248, rounding out the top five teams.
The Red Raiders looked strong on their home course with two golfers in the top six with Jennie Pleas and Miki Ueoka leading the way.
The Kaua‘i High School Red Raider squad will try to mirror Wednesday’s good round to win the 2004 HHSAA/David S. Ishii Foundation Girls Golf Championship.
The Hilo Vikings are the defending champions.
In the meantime, the hot battle for the individual title should come down to the wire with Choy and Chun sharing the lead going into the last round.
Today’s final round starts with a 7 a.m. tee time.
