Councilchairman Kaipo Asing set forth what he thinks are the big issues facing the newly-installed County Council. Asing spoke prior to Mayor Bryan Baptiste’s inaugural speech.
He said the rising cost of real property tax assessments is a priority issue, with some assessments rising “100 to 300 percent in one year.”
Asing cited legislation introduced by former councilman and mayoral candidate Ron Kouchi as the basis for ongoing work on tax relief in this area.
Funding a new land fill site is another top issue, Asing said, as well as how to finance county operations in the light of a potential drop in county revenues.
He said negotiations of a new public workers contract coming up in June would also require attention.
Asing said he hopes to “build a solid foundation” as leader of the new council to benefit all the people of Kaua’i.
