The Kalaheo Neighborhood Center will echo with the sound of basketballs when three teams from O’ahu converge there starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday for a 2-day summer tournament hosted by the Kaua’i Youth Basketball Association (KYBA).
Saturday’s contests move to the Kaua’i High School Gym starting at 9:30 a.m. with the tourney champion being determined in a title game starting at 4:30 p.m.
Anne Matsushima, Richard Miyasaka, and Wendi Murashige head up the Kaimuki Community Park team while Murphy Kealoha coaches the visiting Kalakaua sqaud. Eugene Lapina coaches the Makakilo Knights who round out the visitors.
Steven Matsumoto, Melvin Mararagan, and Rudy Acoba will team up to coach the Kaua’i Basketball team while Kaleo Perez will be coaching the Lihu’e squad.
Maynard Shea will head up the West Kaua’i squad.
The tournament is made possible through the efforts of the KYBA, the County of Kaua’i, Division of Parks and Recreation, Dino Pabre of the Westside Sporting Goods, Paul Miyake and Lihu’e Cafe, Sgt. David Chong of the Honolulu Police Department, Charlene Quinones, Athletic Director, Kaua’i High School, and King Auto Center.

Community Basketball from the past week
There were two games played June 5 at Kilauea Gym.
Lokahi topped Kilauea Hui 21-19 in the first game on a 12-point night from BrittanyCarvalho. For the Hui, Claire Owens and Kieren Pond combined 12 points.
In the second game at Kilauea, a boys 14-under match-up, the Kilauea 3Lakers edged the Westside Hornets 45-40 on 13 points from Bronson McDaniels. Kahau Hollinger scored 14 points for the Hornets.
Also on Wednesday, at the Kalaheo NC Gymnasium, the Kap’a 76ers fell to the Westside Hornets 18-17 in girls Under-14 play. Tori Kagawa, Jamie Horikawa, Kristine Sison, Meredith Hudson, and Faa Taala each scored three points for the Hornets; Vania Singleterry scored eight points for the 76ers.
In the second game, the Kaumakani Supersonics got 12 points from Chantelle Briones in its 24-11 win over the Hanamaulu Coyotes. Arielle Silva scored four points for the Coyotes.

June 4: In the first of two Under-14 basketball games, Futi Tavana scored 18 points to lead the Kalaheo Pistons to a 45-28 win over the Kapa’a Warriors. Greg Ragsac scored nine points for the Warriors.
In the second game, Alden Lahip’s 11 points sent the Westside Hornets to a slim 25-24 win over the Lihue Magic. Irah Nishi scored six points for the Magic.
June 3rd: In a Girls 14-under two-game series, the Kaumakani Supersonics beat the Kauai Fire Raiders 29-8. Rochelle Garvida and Sheila Ramos combined for 14 points for the Supersonics; Mei-Ling Keopuhiwa, Tahnee Shigematsu, Allison Arakaki, and Darcie Allianic each scored two points.
In game two, the Westside Hornets beat the Anahola Sparks 22-13 on five Tori Kagawa points.
Kanoe Woodward scored six points for the Sparks.
June 2: In Men’s Open action, Doug Lewis scored 11 points to lead the Soul-Jahs to a 38-36 win over Nuff Said. Rick Colipano scored 10 points for Nuff Said.
Rob’s got 25 points from John Lippert in its 63-32 win over Second To None. Hans Reeves scored 11 points for Second To None,
The Matais topped the Kauai Freight 84-52 on 25 Jeff Sullenberger points. Jason Kerr scored 20 points for the Freight.
