Plenty of awards were received at Waimea High School’s 2002 MVP Awards Banquet, but two of them top of the list as the most coveted awards of the Menehune athletic year.
Jerrick Fabro and Erin Castillo have received the Richard M. Doi Athletic Scholarship, an award of recoginition handed to the student-athletes who exemplify the Menehune spirit of good character, discipline, loyalty and commitment.
The scholarship, in the form of a direct grant totaling $500 apiece to the male and female senior athlete, may be used for any accredited/liscenced institution. The Menehune Booster Club funds this scholarship and the officers of the club choose recipients.
Fabro, the son of Benjamin Fabro and Adela Ochinang of Kekaha, maintains a 3.952 GPA and participated in track, volleyball, tennis, soccer and basketball. Fabro plans on attending Washington State University and participate in track and major in Physical Education.
Erin Castillo, the daughter of Shane and Estrellita Castillo of Kekaha, maintains a 3.5 GPA and participated in softball, track and basketball. Erin plans on attending U.H. Hilo and participate in softball and major in Sports Medicine.
Fabro also received WHS Scholar Athlete Award; Jennifer Tambio is the WHS female scholar-athlete.
Erin Castillo is the WHS Outstanding Female Athlete of the year James Marques is the WHS Outstanding Male Athlete of the year.
As for the MVPs: Jordon Dizon received top honors for basketball; Melody Manuel is the girl’s basketball most valuable player; Jeremy Manuel is the JV team’s MVP and Jessica Jacinto received top honors for female JV basketball.
Kalailoa Taniguchi is the baseball team’s most valuable player of 2002; Destinie “Maka” Keamoai is the MVP for the Menehune softball team.
John Mission is the male bowling MVP; Ashley DelaCruz is the MVP for the female bowlers.
Michael Girod is Canoeing’s male MVP, Alfred Farias is the male MVP for the JV squad; Kerri-anne Iwai is the female MVP.
Jennifer Tambio is the Waimea Cheerleading squad’s most valuable player.
For Cross Country: Cyrus Tumbaga received top honors for the boys; Mia Moriguchi is MVP for the girls.
Abraham Apilado is not only a Nissan Hall of Honor, but an MVP for the Menehune Football team. Falefia Moe is the MVP for its JV team.
For Golf: Mason Koetje and Naomi Hashimoto are the male and female MVP’s for the KIF links.
Mark Medina and Ashley Canon were the male and female selected as Riflery’s most valuable players.
For Soccer: Evan Agor and Marissa Faye receive boys and girls top honors for the varsity squad; Joseph Mecham and Tori Kagawa are the MVP’s for the Menehune soccer JV teams.
For Swimming: Jack Flores receives top honors for the males, Chesley Ueno is the MVP for the females.
Cyrus Tumbaga nd Karen Sison are the Menehunes Tennis MVPs.
James Marques and Erin Castillo received MVPs for Waimea Track & Field.
Jerrick Fabro is the volleyball team’s MVP; Ashlee Vea received top honors for the girls Volleyball squad. For JV Volleyball, its John Karratti and Alaine Aipoalani.
This year, the Menehune Booster Award goes to Gordon Harada, Jackson Hamamura, Aaron Uyeda.
The US Army Scholar Athlete Awards: Kyle Yokoyama and Mia Moriguchi.
