LIHUE – The old coaching adage insists that offense may put fans in the seats but it is defense that wins ball games (and championships).
Taking a page out of the basketball manual, the Kaua’i High girls junior varsity squad played excellent team defense and set a relentless uptempo pace to gain their second win of the season, a 48-13 pacing over the Kapa’a Warriors Tuesday night at home.
The Warriors were unable to find an offensive rhythm throughout the contest as the Raiders (who improved to 2-1) substituted freely to keep fresh legs on the floor and force the action.
That strategy paid off handsomely as Kauai came up with 16 steals (led by Starlene Kelekoma with 4) and forced 15 Kapa’a turnovers.
13 of 15 Raiders got into the scoring column led by Lindsay Sugiharas game-high 9 points. Teammates Sherri Gebauer and Ashley Belisario added 7 and 6 points respectively.
Warrior forwards Kaui Cutcher and Leilani Josselin each contributed a team-high 4 points apiece.
Freshman forward Samdi Makepa stood out defensively for Kapaa as she hustled for a game-high 6 thefts and a blocked shot.
The Warriors shot only two free throw attempts (and made one) in the contest while the Raiders sank 9 of 26 charity tries.
The Warriors (0-3) will host the league leading Waimea Menehunes (2-0) on Friday, April 12, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. at the Bernice Hundley gym.
