The Warriors play four quarters.
All four quarters.
Despite being down 36-34 heading into the final period, the Kapa’a Warriors amassed a blistering 11-0 run in the first five minutes of the fourth to hold off the Kaua’i Red Raiders 49-45 at the Raiderdome Tuesday night.
The Warriors improve to a perfect 3-0 in regular season play; the Kaua’i Red Raiders fall to 0-3.
Danielle Hill may have been the Warrior ticket. Her eight points and three rebounds in the first three minutes of the fourth gave Kapa’a the cushion it needed to maintain its perfect record.
It’s a good thing she came through. Belinda Butac, who had 16 points and five rebounds in the contest, hit a trey and bucket with just under one minute on the clock to climb the Red Raiders to within three points.
But the Warriors, who held the Red Raiders scoreless for just under five minutes in the final period, wouldn’t roll over. They forced 17 Red Raider turnovers in the game and kept Kaua’i scrambling for buckets until the last tick of the clock.
Kapa’a’s Jasmine Stevenson poured her heart all over the basketball court once again, proving she is by far the grittiest forward in the KIF. She had 11 points and 10 rebounds – the lone double-double of the game.
Kaua’i’s Delsa Tavana had 11 points and six rebounds, and Erin Garlie contributed six points along with her nine rebounds.
Kapa’a trailed for much of the first period until Stevenson and Kanoe Arinaga hit key buckets to give the Warriors an 11-10 lead. They continued to roll through the second, outscoring the Red Raiders 13-11, and maintained a 24-21 lead at the half.
The Red Raiders had an answer.
Four Tavana buckets and two money assists from Kelly Dennis helped put Kaua’i back on track. They led Kapa’a by two heading into the fourth, but couldn’t seal it in the final period
The Kapa’a Warriors will next face the Waimea Menehunes in a first round finale at Bernice Hundley Gymnasium. The Junior Varsity game starts at 5:30 p.m.; the Varsity begins 20 minutes after the completion of the Junior Varsity contest.
