Despite Belinda Butac’s 14 points, the Kaua’i Red Raiders fell to speedy Kalani 74-40 Wednesday night at the Raiderdome in Lihue.
The loss drops Kaua’i to 1-2 in preseason play. Kalani will travel to Bernice Hundley tonight to face the Kapa’a Warriors 20 minutes after the junior varsity game, which starts at 5 p.m.
Lisa Lum led Kalani scoring with 14 points. Ashley Takata, who impressed Raider fans with a flashy display of passing and ball handling, added 13 points; Chenty Bonifacio also had 13 points.
The Red Raiders couldn’t establish an offensive set in the first due to a choking Kalani press. Two turnovers further inhibited Raider scoring opportunities, and Kalani was up 21-7 after one.
Kaua’i had an offensive burst in the third quarter, but Kalani kept hitting their shots and controlled the tempo the rest of the way.
They outscored Kaua’i 25-24 in the third period and 13-9 in the fourth to roll to 34 point win.
