In more ways than one, community hoopsters are flying through the 2002 season.
In boys 14-under action, Monday, at Kalaheo Neighbordhood Gymnasium, the Westide Hornets, Lihue Lakers and Kapa’a Warriors each went to the locker rooms with wins.
Chad Barba led the Hornets with 14 points in a 34-24win over the Lihue Kings in the first game. Both Chad Nonaka and Kaleo Perez scored five points apiece for the Kings.
The Lakers’ Dynamic Duo John Penn and Jason Soriano (who had key three-pointers) combined for 20 points in its overtime win over the Kalaheo Pistons. Alan Kalili dropped nine for the Pistons. and Josh Bradbury had eight points.
In the final game Monday night, the Kapa’a Warriors beat the Puhi Wildcats 44-25 behind 11 points from Michael Lindsey. Brandon B allesteros notched 14 points for the Wildcats.
-In Girls 12-under action Saturday, Kiauea #1 and #2, and the Lokahi Girls came out with wins at the Kalaheo gym.
Kapua Chandler’s nine points pushed Kilauea #1 to a 30-10 drubbing of Hanamaulu #1.
Kieren Pond’s 10 points lifted Kilauea #2 over Hanamaulu #2 22-14 in the second game of the evening. Tristen Rosare notched eight points for Hanamaulu #2.
And in the final game, Camden Lorenz’ 10 points helped boost the Lokahi Girl’s to a 29-8 win over the Kapa’a Ladybugs. The Ladybug scoring was led by Savannah Kupihea, who dropped five points.
-In Girls 12-under basketball on Friday in Kilauea, the Westside Hornets topped Hanamaulu #1 22-17 on Tori Espino’s six points. Kapua Sugai had six for Hanamaulu.
The Lihue Raiders beat Kapa’a 22-18 on 10 Carie Inouye points. Savannha Kupihea scored eight for Kapa’a. Mari Punzal’s 11 helped the Lihue Raiders to a 25-12 win over Kilauea #2. Kerion Pond ahd five for Kilauea.
