They’ve been here before.
Some of them three times over again.
And so it was no surprise to watch the Waimea Menehunes pound the Kaimuki Bulldogs 8-1 in the first game of the Chevron State Softball Championships Wednesday at UH Wahine Ballpark.
They were loose, they were confidant. It was just another game for the Menehunes, and although their star hitter Bridget Louis struggled at the plate (0-4), they still pulled off a rather definitive victory in Honolulu.
Maybe it was all Albette Nawai and the mere four hits and one run she allowed in seven innings.
Maybe it was the single error they committed in the game, or catcher Destinie “Maka” Keamoai’s sniper snag at first.
It was probably a combination of these feats that breezed the Menehunes through the first round.
But the talk of this game was the backup Louis got from the rest of Waimea’s sticks.
Erin Castillo hit a two-run jack to continue her late season run, Keamoai went an impressive 3-4 with a double, and Jaime Koerte went 2-4 with two runs and a double to relieve some pressure on the Menehune clean-up Queen.
The Waimea Menehunes now face their toughest challenge – the top seeded Kamehameha Warriors.
They will battle the Warriors at 8 p.m. tonight night at UH Wahine Softball Stadium in Honolulu.
