It was expected, but not necessarily written in stone.
Many thought Kapa’a could turn it around and crack the rock that served as Waimea’s stronghold for the duration of the season.
But Kapa’a could only chip a tiny piece off the Menehune authority – they were the only team to beat Waimea this season. They did it only once and in 12 innings.
And on Saturday, in an on-again off-again drizzle at Kaumakani Ball Park, the Waimea Menehunes won two games over the Warriors and retained the 2002 KIF Softball Title.
They beat the Warriors with a seventh inning RBI tie-breaker from Erin Castillo to take the first game 6-5, and then swamped Kapa’a in the finale 11-1.
For the group who worked so hard during the year – even conducting work-outs on New Year’s Day – all one can say is, “How sweet it is.”
The KIF tips its hat to the Menehunes and wish them well in the State Championships.
