Postseason will continue for next four weeks
This past Sunday the Garden Island Men’s Soccer League playoffs kicked off at the Wailua homestead field. The four teams participating in the tournament are Anahola Hanapa Hui, Hanalei Soccer Club, Westside Afterburners and the Wailua Hooligans. The above teams are listed by rank, from best to worst, based on their regular-season records. The double-elimination tournament will be played over the next four Sundays.
Sunday 27
Hanalei S.C. 6,
Westside Afterburners 2
Given three weeks off since the end of the regular season, teams in the league had ample time to heal injuries before the tournament began. So, both Hanalei and the Westside showed up with full rosters and fresh legs. Unfortunately for the Afterburners, the momentum of the game went in Hanalei’s favor from the start.
Tom Green launched a perfect chip over the leaping goaltender’s head, giving the all-important first goal to Hanalei.
Shortly thereafter, Anthony Tangelder broke free into the open field, and crushed a shot on the Westside keeper Mark Perales. The ball curved around Perales, and then came back just inside the post, making it 2-0. Next Terje Haakonsen received a pass on the run and took it right down the throat for the score.
Finally, the Westside responded when Ernie Kamara streaked down the right side, shot the ball past the charging Hanalei keeper and into the net, bringing the score to 3-1.
Nicholas Caffone, a recently returned player for Hanalei, put in a one-time shot to make it 4-1. The next goal came from Cola Lindmann, who finished an open-net shot set up by Scott Miles, who beat the keeper. The first half came to a close with the score 5-1.
In the second half, Westside brought Perales out of goal and put him on the field as a forward and a source of energy. This proved to be wise, as Perales scored his team’s second and final goal ten minutes into the second half. Haakonsen tallied his second goal as he shot the ball under the diving goaltender, bringing the final score to 6-2.
Playoff games will resume June 3 at the Wailua Homestead field.
