The County of Kaua’i Parks & Recreation Division has received a federally-funded grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to offer a five-week sports and education program.
The National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) will begin this year on June 18 and run until July 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. The NYSP will be offered at Kaua’i Community College on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays; on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the program will be provided at County of Kaua’i recreational sites.
Through sports and education, the NYSP strives to encourage children between the ages of 10 and 16 to improve their skill in sports, become physically fit, have better health habits and learn more about career and educational opportunities. The NYSP provides free instruction in sports such as swimming, basketball, softball and tennis, as well as hands-on activities in health education and career development. Children who register and qualify for the program will receive a free medical exam, a NYSP tee-shirt and snacks/lunches during the five-week session.
Medical exams are required of all children and youth eligible to participate. Free exams will be given at Kaua’i Community College June12-14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Student Services Center. In addition, private physician medical exams will be accepted.
Additionally, transportation to and from events will be made available at stops island-wide. Priority eligibility will be given to youngsters in the community whose parent(s) and/or guardian(s) meet National Department of Health and Human Services requirements.
Forms for enrollment in the NYSP can be picked up at the County Parks & Recreation Division, island-wide Neighborhood Centers and Queen Lili’oukalani Children’s Center (QLCC).
