LIHUE — Sometimes before going to where you’re headed, one stops to reflect on where they’ve been. For Kapaa High School senior Ka’imi Malina and Kauai High School senior Justice Funamura-Sasil, those beginnings were on the field where they played in their youth in Lihue. On Thursday, it’s where they announced where their futures are headed.
The Rainbow Warriors’ season started with a lot of promise, but then recently it has slid. The University of Hawaii’s football team is hoping to end a three-game losing streak this weekend as UH hosts conference rival Utah State. Kickoff is set for 5:59 p.m. Saturday at Aloha Stadium.
Island School sophomore Jaden De Souza placed second overall among the girls runners at the 2018 Honolulu Marathon Cross Country Championships state meet on Saturday at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. De Souza completed the three-mile course with a time of 20 minutes, 8.19 seconds. Chloe Gangnath of Seabury Hall (Maui Interscholastic League) won with a time of 19:20.73.
Waimea High School’s varsity girls volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 New City Nissan Girls Volleyball State Championships–Division II tournament. Waimea defeated No. 4 seed Kaiser High School of the Oahu Interscholastic Association in the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at Saint Francis School in Honolulu, 3-1 — 25-19, 25-23, 17-25, 25-13.
It all comes down to this weekend. Kapaa High School’s varsity football team will square off against Waimea High School this Saturday afternoon at Hanapepe Stadium. The junior varsity game will start at noon, and the varsity game will follow.
