WAILUA — The removal of debris accumulated at the base of the Wailua River bridge resulted in traffic slow down Monday evening as one lane of southbound traffic was closed off to allow for machinery to dislodge and remove the accumulated vegetative debris.
A single southbound lane was also closed Tuesday night.
“There was a lot of debris,” said Tim Sakahara of the Hawaii State Department of Transportation. “We needed to get it cleared because with the threat of additional rain, the accumulation would create a slowdown in the river water flow and result in possible flooding conditions, upriver.”
The debris could threaten the structure integrity of the bridge, as well.
The National Weather Service is forecasting the possibility of an increase in shower activity across the entire state starting Wednesday night and lasting through Friday when an old weather front sags southward into the Hawaiian Islands.
Coupled with an upper level trough passing overhead, the result is an increase in shower activity with some locally heavy rainfall and thunderstorms possible. The deep moisture will start decreasing during Friday with drier and more stable weather expected during the weekend.
“The debris removal work at both the Wailua River and Hanalei bridges were completed Monday night,” Sakahara said. “For now, no traffic shutdowns for those bridges are in effect.”
