KAUMAKANI — The weekend rain storm let up enough for three games of the Kauai Senior Softball League to be played in Kaumakani while the other half of the slate got washed out in Hanamaulu on Saturday.
The three games on tap for Peter Rayno Softball Park were postponed due to inclement weather and an unplayable field. But out on the Westside, there was no stopping kupuna play.
And, the undefeated is down to one team.
Kuku’s Aces prepared an impeccable field for play and hosted the triple-header. The early game pitted the Ace’s against the newly dynamic Kruzers. Da Kruzers struck early and struck often and kept the home team at bay. The visitors made the long trip from Kilauea worthwhile and ran away with a 13-8 win.
Two teams with powerful lineups squared off in the middle match up with Barteks and Ohana in a slugfest. Both teams sport remarkable hitting prowess and it came down to pitching and defensive. Ohana ran into a buzz saw as Barteks turned up the scoring heat rolling to a 13-6 conquest.
The morning ended with another bigtime encounter with the Rookies putting their undefeated streak on the line, going for win number nine against West Kauai. The Rookies were unable to get untracked and went down to a very motivated West Kauai squad, 9-4.
The loss drops the Rookies into a second place tie with the Ohana Motors Rebels with 8-1 records while the Keonimana Gents remain out front of the league with a 9-0 record.
The rained out games between the Hillsiders and A’s, the Gents and Islanders, and the Legends and Kawaihau will have to be made up no later than April 14 at the end of the first round of play, according to league commissioner Pat Baniaga.
There will be more Senior Softball action on Saturday when the league swings into the two garden fields on the island with games at Puhi Park and the Wailua Houselots.
The Ohana Motors Rebels will welcome Barteks in the first of three in the monstrous stadium field. The Rookies will take on Da Kruzers in game number two, and the finale will feature Ohana and the Hanamaulu Hillsiders.
On the East side at Houselots Park, Kawaihau will host the Islanders in the first match. The Aloha Kia Lihue A’s will have their hands full with the East Kauai Legends, and the day wraps up with Kuku’s Aces testing the Keonimana Gents. The games begin at 9 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
