Vandalism continues at County of Kauai parks, as park staff discovered the sky light of the renovated comfort station damaged at Poipu Beach Park as well as fixtures at the Hanapepe Cliffside Park burned.
The sky light at Poipu Beach Park was found damage by park staff on Friday morning, March 9, while fixtures at the Hanapepe Cliffside Park was discovered burned Thursday morning.
“It is frustrating that these types of occurrences are becoming all too frequent in our parks,” said county Department of Parks &Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo. “We are hoping the public can help to curb these incidents, as these parks are for our community members and visitors to enjoy.”
If deemed necessary, the sky light at Poipu Beach Park would cost about $1,500 for parts and labor. The fixtures at Hanapepe Park would cost $500 for parts and cleaning supplies.
On Tuesday, March 6, a newly improved playground at Poipu Beach Park was discovered vandalized by members of the public. Cables from the playground’s Boingo drum panel were cut and has since been repaired.
Part of a $670,000 project by the Department of Parks &Recreation to upgrade its heavily used park facilities, improvements to Poipu Beach Park — which included replacing fixtures in the main comfort station and improvements to the pavilions, playground, and showers — were completed in the latter half of February.
The Hanapepe Cliffside Park comfort station was planned and constructed by community volunteers with the support of the County of Kauai.
To report suspicious activity, please call Police Dispatch at 241-1711.
Lock the facilities up at night.
The kids are not being heard, this is their cry for attention. They communicate with one sentence texts and are not given the chance to tell their stories to their parents, teachers and friends.
Not being heard? What are they saying other than “we were raised to hate?” I hear that loud and clear!
If these high quality pieces are not caught, EVERYONE’s tax money will continue to be wasted.
How many times should we post the solution to vandalism in our parks and facilities? Hidden Cameras security system. We don’t have enough officers to patrol them. Best $2000 investment instead of replacing all of the fixtures. County council what do you think? Let’s talk about it and see what’s fair for all party’s concerned. I’m mean if we spend a lot of money on the vandals they wouldn’t be bored and break our bathrooms. With all the interest it’s going to be deferral after deferral. I know, never enough time to do it right the first time, but always enough time to finally go back and try again.

Who were these members of the public who vandalized the beach park?
