WAINIHA — Kauai police responded on Saturday to a report of a vehicle in the Wainiha River, near the Wainiha twin bridges.
When police arrived, they found a green-colored Jeep SUV completely submerged in the river, along the east side of the bridge.
According to a preliminary investigation, police believe the driver of the vehicle may have struck the bridge and then reversed into the river.
A witness in a nearby home heard the crash and went to the scene, where he saw the vehicle’s headlights shining in the water. The witness jumped into the river, but found that the Jeep was empty. The driver of the vehicle had apparently fled the scene.
Police have contacted the owner of the vehicle to have the Jeep removed from the river. The investigation remains ongoing.
Right! Wait for a derelict driver to remove the vehicle from the water…and in the meantime, fuel, oil leaking into the waterway. Oh, right….less tourism is good!
