LIHUE — The Red Raiders swept the Menehune in two games to start the 2018 season.
Kauai High School’s varsity baseball team defeated Waimea High, 11-4, in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Vidinha Stadium.
Tied at 4-4 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Kauai (2-0 KIF) scored seven runs on seven hits. Red Raiders outfielder Hoku Parbo hit a two-RBI double to left field, and infielder Tyler Oshima knocked a two-RBI triple to right field in the inning.
Kauai High opened with a 4-0 lead after three innings. In the third, Red Raiders infielder Ricky Rego hit a two-RBI double to left-center field, and infielder Jacob Borrero hit an RBI single to right.
Down four runs going into the top of the fifth inning, Waimea (0-2 KIF) plated four runs in the inning to level the score. The inning started with back-to-back singles by Menehune outfielder Nalu Lazaro and infielder Lacin Montemayor.
Later on with the bases loaded, Menehune pinch hitter Tysson Unciano plated the team’s first run on walk after an 11-pitch at bat. Waimea then got its next three runs on a hit-by-pitch, an error and a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the seventh, Red Raiders relief pitcher Christian Manera — who started the game as a designated hitter — struck out relief pitcher Kash Akita in the first at bat before being relieved by Jaden Domingsil.
Domingsil threw a groundout, walk and pop out to end the game.
Kauai got its 11 runs on 16 hits, left nine runners on base and recorded two errors. Parbo was 3-5 at the plate with two singles, a double, two RBIs and scored two runs. Oshima was 2-4 with a single, a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Rego was 2-3 two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored.
Manera was the winning pitcher for Kauai High. He relieved starting pitcher Dahlus Hood in the fifth inning. In 2.0 innings, Manera threw three strikeouts, two walks and one hit-by-pitch.
Waimea got its four runs on five hits, left four runners on base and recorded four errors. Lazaro was 2-3 with two singles and scored one run. Montemayor was 2-3 with two singles.
Menehune starting pitcher Reydan Rull took the loss for Waimea. Rull pitched the first five innings, getting one strikeout and one walk.
Kauai High beat Waimea in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 15-4, ending the game in the fifth inning on the 10-run mercy rule.
Kauai got its 15 runs on eight hits, left five runners on base and recorded two errors in the first game. Oshima was 2-2 with a single, a double, two walks, three RBIs and two walks and scored three runs. Red Raiders outfielder Blake Probasco was 2-2 with a single, a double, one walk, three RBIs, one walk and scored one run.
Relief pitcher Taylor Apilado, who started the game as an infielder, was the winning pitcher. He came in the third inning to relieve starting pitcher Borrero and threw the rest of the game. He tallied one strikeout — the last out of the game — four walks and one-hit-by-pitch.
Waimea got four runs on four hits, left five runners on and had one error. Menehune infielder Keaka Wisneski was 2-2 with a couple of singles and a walk. Menehune starting pitcher Maximus Ham, who came back into the game to pitch after he was relieved in the second inning, took the loss.
Waimea will play at Kapaa High School (0-0 KIF) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Kauai High will play Kapaa in a doubleheader Saturday at Vidinha Stadium. The first game will begin 4 p.m.
