LIHUE — Kapaa High School sophomore Maddie Hoesel added her fourth state qualifying swim Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation qualifying swim meet hosted by Kauai High School at its pool.
LIHUE — Kapaa High School sophomore Maddie Hoesel added her fourth state qualifying swim Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation qualifying swim meet hosted by Kauai High School at its pool.
Swimming with cheering support from Sara Funtanilla, a Waimea High School senior and former co-team leader in the Mokihana Aquatics program, Hoesel picked up her fourth qualifying swim by finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle event on a 26.32-second run, bettering her previous best time of 26.71.
Host Kauai High School continued to collect more state-qualifying standards, led by Akira Williams, who picked up a state-qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.32) with his second-place finish to teammate Jack Machorek (1:00.45), who touched first in the event.
Williams also set a KIF record in the 50 freestyle, churning to a 22.05 finish, bettering the KIF record set by Machorek (22:06) in 2017.
Raider teammate Zachary Safford also picked up a state-qualifyfing time in the 200 freestyle (1:50.77). He also broke his own KIF record swim of 52.52 in the 100 butterfly, set in 2017, by touching the wall at 52.11.
Kauai’s boys 200 freestyle relay team, including Safford, Williams and Machorek, got Dutch Fairbanks to fill in the No. 3 spot to set a new KIF record in the event with a 1:31.55 swim, bettering the 1:32.79 time the team set earlier in the season.
