Charles Brown (he plays basketball, too!) shows off his award from the Kauai Complex Area Spelling Bee at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School in Puhi, where he is in the seventh grade.

Mahalo to Debra Badua and her Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School staff on hosting the Kauai Complex Area Spelling Bee (and mahalo to Brent Mizutani, Leila Kuboyama and the state Department of Education ohana for the coordination) Thursday night (yes, there was Kauai Interscholastic Federation junior varsity soccer, too). Calvin Bailey and Sophia Sculley will be representing Kauai at the state bee March 9! How many years have we been doing this, Jan Tenbruggencate?

Mahalo, too, Lenny Rapozo (he had to rush off to a game after officiating the game) for the community league youth basketball games schedule … will be checking them out Monday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, where we will see coaches Clarence Sales and Bobby Kamakele. They were all at the final KIF girls basketball game Friday night where Kauai High School (congrats, coach James Dingus) finished undefeated following a great game that went down to the wire.

And if you missed the excitement, kudos to Melissa McFerrin-Warrack and all the collaborative agencies on opening The Ocean Around Us happening at Kukui Grove Center … this week we look at coral and the reefs with Katie Nalesere starting Friday night (yes, Kumu’s Cupboard was open — even with the rain).
