One of the perks of having the firefighters visit the Kauai Interscholastic Federation track meet is how some kids at the event got a tour of the big fire truck. Kudos to Coach Ron Velasco and the KIF ohana on another great meet that was made even more exciting by having the junior varsity baseball game next door between Kauai and Kapaa high schools.
Kathy Kovala (you never know who you’ll run into at an award presentation) has been coming to Kauai for more than 20 years. She was wrapping up her show at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center Friday. She’s had a long history on Kauai (she even got to know about Arius Hopman’s volcanic art long before he unveiled it Friday), starting at the Spring Fantasy Orchid Show hosted by the Garden Island Orchid Society.
That’s how she got to know Ada Koene (she’s helping Helen Lacona sell the Soup Lady’s cookbooks Wednesdays at the Kauai Culinary Market), and Susan Fukumoto (she dropped in to visit the watercolor artist on her final day at the KSA gallery) is the person who convinced Kathy to start teaching classes during her Kauai trip.
Kathy said she’ll be at the Smith’s Tropical Gardens teaching for the remainder of her trip here.
OK, time to go check with Shelby Erdmann, Berna Souza and Kaina Makua and the Waimea River cleanup.
