County to charge fees for online payments

LIHU‘E — County officials announced that the Department of Public Works Wastewater Management Division and Department of Finance Motor Vehicle Registration and Real Property Tax divisions will begin charging fees for customers paying their sewer bills, motor vehicle registrations and real property tax bill online, beginning Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The county had been waiving these fees to promote online payments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Online payments made after today will include the following fees: a $2.50 convenience fee plus a 2.2% credit card or $1 eCheck fee per transaction. These fees are paid to NIC Hawai‘i for providing the online-payment service. A fee is not assessed for walked-in or mailed-in payments.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the public is encouraged to submit payments via this online service to reduce foot traffic at the Kapule Building of the Lihu‘e Civic Center.

For customers who prefer not to use the online service, appointments are still required for in-person payments at the Kapule Building, 4444 Rice St., Lihuʻe.

To access the appointment link through the County of Kaua‘i website, visit kauai.gov and click on the “GetInLineOnline” icon. Customers may also pay their bills by dropping off sealed envelopes containing checks in the drop box located to the right of the glass doors at the Kapule Building. Checks should be made payable to the Director of Finance.

Kupuna hours are now offered from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Monday through Friday. During these hours, no appointments are necessary for those ages 65 and older. Kupuna will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.
