It’s important for Kaua’i’s youth to continue shredding island beaches the way famous surfers Titus Kinimaka, Sonny Garcia, and the Irons brothers have in past years.
There’s no better way to continue developing your skills at the Kai Kane surfing competition series, which will commence with its third contest at Pine Trees, January 12 and 13.
The contest offers spots for all ages — the Menehunes, for 12 and unders; the Boys, for the 13-14 age group; Junior Men, for the 15-17 age group; Open Men, for anyone ages 18-24; Women, open to all ages; Masters, 25-34 (one heat only); Senior Men’s, for 35 and over (one heat only); Boy’s Bodyboard, 14 and under; Junior Bodyboard, 15-17, and Senior Bodyboard, 18 and over.
The contest format will include a six-man heat, each heat taking up 15 minutes, the judges recording the contestants best three waves (only six waves maximum). The finals format will be similar to the preliminary heats.
The contest costs $20 for Hawaii Surfing Federation members, $25 for beach entry, $30 for non member. If the surfer wants to join any additional divisions, their is a $10 fee for HSF members, and $15 for everyone else.
If you can’t make it to Pine Trees, there are a number of contests coming up in the next few months.
The Kealia/Davidson’s competition will be held February 16 and 17 (February 23 and 24 are alternate dates); The second Pine Trees will take place March 16 and 17 (March 23 and 24 alternate dates); Prince Kuhio, May 4 and 5 (May 11 and 12 alternate dates).
