Kaua’i’s softball team is in a tough spot, right now.
They lost last week’s game against Kapa’a in the last two innings, and they once again fell to the almighty Menehunes last night.
The team can’t seem to contain Waimea’s usual suspects.
Bridget Louis now floats on a cloud above all KIF sluggers. She went 3-4 with four RBI’s, and hit her second home-run in the KIF – she’s the sole possessor of a home-run in league play. Catcher Destinie “Maka” Keamoai, who bats ahead of Louis, isn’t doing to bad herself. Louis gets those extra RBI’s from somewhere, and normally “Maka” is the gal to give it to her.
Keamoai went 1-3 with three RBI’s, a triple, and scored two runs. The two are a back-to-back line-up that faltered only one game this season – in their shutout loss to Kapa’a in last weekend’s double-header.
But Waimea’s hitting is not what has caused the Red Raiders to lose three games on the west side. It wasn’t their defense that faltered, yesterday.
They committed no errors to Waimea’s three.
In truth, it’s that Kaua’i got only one RBI – from Pua Kaluahine – and scored just three runs. It’s the fact that they stranded five runners on base, and that they couldn’t capitalize on those Menehune errors.
The Kapa’a Warriors found a way to crack the Menehune seal, and it wasn’t only because of Tiana Laranio’s pitching. Somewhere in the lost sea of cunning Menehune pitches, the Warriors found a run.
And that’s the way they have to play when they face Waimea again.
Anna Quibilan and Sarah Yoshikawa have done a fine job on the mound, but somewhere in the sea of Menehune pitches, the Red Raiders need to find a way to score.
Saturday may be a good place to start.
The Red Raiders host two games against the Warriors at Isenberg Park this weekend. Laranio (if she is the starter), is coming off her best performance of the season. Kaua’i needs to get some clutch moments at the plate, and get a pitcher like Laranio, or Charisse Labuguen for that matter, into trouble.
They need at least one win this weekend to feel confidant through the rest of this season.
