The past week was very quiet on the local election front.
After a fast start, including three mayoral candidates announcing in February, and one of those candidates, council member Bryan Baptiste, getting his people out on the roadside waving signs seven months before September’s primary, only one candidate picked up papers this week.
Lawa’i contractor and small businessman Paul Lucas, who did not run for office in the last election, picked up papers for this year’s county council race.
There are currently three seats open on next year’s council.
In addition to Baptiste, Council chair Ron Kouchi is running for Maryanne Kusaka’s seat.
And two-term council member Gary Hooser has announced he is challenging Jonathan Chun for Kaua’i’s only state senate seat (District 7), since the districts were redrawn in 2001.
