Though Dr. Jeffrey Goodman of Kilauea is on a mercy mission in faraway Afghanistan he’s found a way to keep in close touch with his staff, friends and patients back on Kaua’i.
Emails sent by Goodman from Afghanistan are being posted and archived at www.compumaxcomputers.com/jeff.
Barbara Leaman, a staff nurse at the North Shore Clinic at Kilauea, said Goodman is posting his writings in part to help keep the staff at the clinic up-to-date on his mercy work. She said Goodman’s sister-in-law is hosting the Web site on the mainland.
Goodman worked in Afghan refugee camps in 1987 and 1991 and developed friendships in the faraway nation, and a first-hand understanding of the Afghan people.
An email from the Kilauea doctor dated February 6, 2002 included this excerpt:
“I don’t think I have ever worked this hard. There are so many objectives to accomplish, so many problems.
“I made up my mind that I would finally send an e-mail to all of you. I wanted to tell you how well I am doing. That fact is, right now, I am miserable, exhausted and can only hope that there is some hot soup in the kitchen.
“There is snow on the ground in Kabul. My radio shack thermometer says that is is 33.6 degrees outside and 55 degrees inside. It is 5:00 PM and the sky is gray. My fingers are so cold that it is difficult to type. The electricity is out and there is no heat. There is no hot water for a bath. I just saw a notification from Mr. Karzai (the current leader of Afghanistan) that he fears for the safety NGO (non government organizations) staff like IMC which includes people like me and my team.”
