The Kapa’a native was the only Kauaian to make the finals at this year’s Junior Championships. She fell to Honolulu’s Ashley Ohira 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 11-13 in a close fight to retain runner-up honors.
Tom may have put Kaua’i on the map at the tournament, but she wasn’t the only tennis player to return to the Garden Island with proven success.
Lihue’s Jordon Kukino advanced to the third and fourth place game of the Grand Prix Boys 16 singles. He placed fourth after falling to Mark Ilagan of Honolulu. Andy Narido of Keaau defeated Michael Lim of Honolulu for the division title.
Princeville’s Justin Vea advanced to the consolation bracket of the Boys 18 Intermediate Singles, where he won by the withdrawal of Ahue Nicolas of Wailuku.
Princeville’s Kyle Barrett fell to Kona’s Riley Saito in the consolation bracket of the Grand Prix Boys 14 Singles. Colin Fujishige of Kaneohe won the division after defeating Kailua’s Skyler Tateishi.
