Backs Kamika
I missed the letter Kamika Smith referred to from the visitor changing their annual plans due to traffic problems on Kaua‘i. I know it is difficult to get through Kapa‘a and other areas at certain times. I think the residents of Kaua‘i handle a difficult situation with typical Aloha.
Traffic is bad everywhere – everywhere people want to be. The beaches are crowded in Florida and the roads to the beaches are crowded too. I am inspired by the drivers of Kaua‘i. I let cars merge in more often after spending time on Kauai. Each time I say to myself as if the other driver could hear me, “Aloha.” That driver may forget it seconds later, but it makes me feel better and reminds me of a beautiful place with special people.
There are inconsiderate drivers everywhere there are inconsiderate people. What I noticed on Kaua‘i is the worse the traffic is, the nicer the people are. When you are not having to wait to pull out onto the road, no one is there to wave you in and give you a smile. While I would wish open roads for everyone late to work, I think difficult situations show you what is truely inside a person. I get more waves and smiles in Kauai traffic than in Florida traffic. Thank you for the practical applications of Aloha.
If the person who canceled their trip did so to stay in a place with less traffic, they are also staying in a place where few other people care to go. May they enjoy their solitude as much as I enjoy Kaua‘i.

Aloha on the road
We have had the good fortune to both visit and live on Kaua‘i. (And we are trying hard to move back!!!) During our time on the island our car was smashed by a visitor who was not in control of his vehicle, in fact he hit multiple cars. Things happen, both to locals and visitors. I find the “visitors” letter to be absurd. He is only hurting himself by not coming to Kaua‘i. I say more power to him, anyone that thinks like that really does not need to be a part of paradise.
