Paul Ikaika Alapai
Paul Ikaika Alapai of Kapa‘a, died June 21, 2004, in Anahola at the age of 67.
Born June 21, 1937, in Kapa‘a, he was a combat infantryman for the armed forces.
He is survived by 11 sisters: Esther Marie Heen, Flora Iseri, Miriam Lahapa (William) Texeira, Frances Leina Kaneakua, Lei Millarich, Lucille Momi Alapai, Katherine Kalehua (Gary) Ham Young, Anne (Tom) Hashimoto, Flossy Tai Hook, Lady Haumea, Travis (Jerry) Tubal; three brothers: China Haumea, Henry (Ricky) Tai Hook, and Wilbert “Ah Fook” (Lillian) Tai Hook; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call on Saturday, July 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church where mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. by Father Al. Burial to follow at Kapaa Public Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Faustino Fernando
Faustino Rejedor Fernando of Kaumakani died at Queen’s Hospital on June 20, 2004 at the age of 63.
Born in Laoag City, Philippines on Sept. 8, 1940, he was a retired sugar evaporator processor with Gay & Robinson.
He is survived by his wife, Estrella; three sons, Esteve (Jody) Fernando of Hanapepe, Roy (Marcelina) Fernando of Cavite, Philippines and Elmer Fernando of Laoag, Philippines; three daughters, Estrellita (Cesar) Acoba of Lawa‘i, Esther (Paul) Lumabao of Hanapepe and Ednalyn Onate of Gattaran, Philippines; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Sinang Jacinto and Rosemelia Jacinto both of Philippines; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, July 2, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel; visitation also at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 3 at Holy Cross Catholic church; mass officiated by Father Biz will begin at 10 a.m. Followed by burial at the Hanapepe Public Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.

Bernadette Mahuiki
Bernadette Kauilani Alapai Mahuiki of Ha‘ena, died on June 26, 2004, at the age of 68.
Born Feb. 13, 1936, to Samuel Kalua Alapai and Myra Elizabeth Neumann and raised in Ha‘ena, Kaua‘i, she is a graduate of Mid Pacific Institute.
She is survived by her husband Samson Kapae Mahuiki Sr.; sons Leslie (Keli‘i) and Nalani Alapai, Samson Jr. and Susan Mahuiki, daughter, Cheryl Alapai, brother Jacob (Kopa) Maka, brother-in-law Abner Delima, sister-in-law Dottie Alapai; six grandchildren: Kaneala, Kalei, Kanoe, Kaiulani, Kauinohea, Kekoa and great granddaughter, Chloe, four hanai daughters: Leini, and Lori Delima, Lisa Atone and LaniRae Lave; numerous nieces and nephews; hanai sister Aunti Vi and Debbie; hanai son Kendall Struxness; hanai daughters Sage and Joanna and her Christian family.
She worked for Hanalei Plantation and Coco Palms. A housewife, she was secretary for Hawaiian Farmers of Hanalei; Waipa Foundation board member; Kauai Taro Growers Association secretary, Imiola Board member. She was active in North Shore Christian Church as a member and the choir director.
Memorial services with ashes will be held on Saturday, July 3, at 11 a.m. at the North Shore Christian Church in Kilauea located at Kauai Christian Academy School, 4000 Kilauea Rd.
The family suggests casual or aloha attire, and requests that flowers be omitted.

Kazumi Keuma
Kazumi Keuma of Lihu‘e died June 25, 2004, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 76.
A homemaker, she was born Nov. 26, 1927, in Makaweli.
She is survived by her husband: Donald Keuma; one son Kyle Ching; two brothers: Harry Oka and Clifton Oka; three sisters: Sachiko Mason, Ann Bellinger, and Tomoe Oka; two hanai sons: Haruki Masters and Curtis Jackson; and two grandchildren.
Private services will be held. Arrangements are being handled by Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
Miguela Mier
Miguela “Maggie” Mier of Makaweli, died June 24, 2004, at Ann Pearl Nursing Home in Honolulu at the age of 86.
A homemaker, she was born Aug. 29, 1917, in Makaweli.
She is survived by two sons: George (Gloria) Somalpong of Makaweli, Richard (Aldirica) Peralta of Honolulu and one daughter: Augustina (Mike) Carballero of Lana‘i; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. on Friday, July 2, at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa‘a where mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by Father Al.
