James J. DeYoung
James Jess DeYoung of Ocean Park, Wash., and formerly of Kaua‘idied June 22, 2004, at the age of 64. Born Oct. 26, 1939, in Hillsboro, Ore., he owned his own contracting business, building homes and commercial buildings in Oregon, Maui and Kaua‘i.
He is survived by his wife Pattie of Ocean Park, Wash.; sons Bret De-Young of Bend, Ore., and Brian De-Young of O‘ahu; a step-daughter Chris Gardner of Ocean Park; step-sons Tony Gray of Maui, and Dennis Gardner of Yamhill, Ore.; sister Shirley Shanander of Acme, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private cremation has been held. A celebration of his life will be held at the Ocean Park Moose Lodge on Thursday, July 8, at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association, c/o

Melvyn Morio Hamamoto, of Aiea, O‘ahu and former resident of Hilo, HI., died June 5, 2004, at Kuakini Medical Center at the age of85. Born in Kealia, he was a retired painter for the state of Hawaii, Dept. of Accounting and General Services and member of 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 522nd Field
Artillery Battalion, Service Battery. He is survived by his wife: Sumie “Sue” Hamamoto of Aiea; son Gregg (Debra) Hamamoto of Honolulu; daughter: Marilyn (Stanley)
Tamamoto fo Honolulu; 4 granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; and one brother: Shinichi (Masayo) Hamamoto of Lihu‘e.
Service will be Friday, July 2, at 6 p.m. at Hosoi Garden Mortuary on O‘ahu. Visitation from 5 p.m. with service to begin at 6 p.m. The family suggests aloha attire and that flowers be omitted.
Arrangements are being handled by Hosoi Garden Mortuary.
Other deaths
John W. Lundy, a lumber company owner who agreed to pay $30 in 1939 to sponsor one of the first three Little League teams, died Saturday. He was 95.
Lundy remained active in the league for more than half a century, retiring from Little League’s international board of directors in 2000.
His family business — now Lundy Construction — continues to support Little League teams in the Williamsport area, as it has for 65 years.
Jacob Viarrial, leader of the Pojoaque Pueblo tribe for more than 20 years, died Sunday of a heart attack in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico He was 58.
Viarrial, who was re-elected to another two-year term as tribal governor in January, was known for defending his pueblo and tribal sovereignty.
