On Tuesday, August 3rd, at 6 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium, there will be an exhibition game of youth lacrosse with players from Guilford, Ct., and from the Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association on O‘ahu. The following 2 days, the players and coaches from the Guilford Youth Lacrosse Association will be offering a clinic to all kids and adults who are interested in learning how to play, and coach lacrosse.
The clinic will also be held at Vidinha Stadium on August 4 from 1-4 p.m., and on August 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On August 5, there will be a coaching clinic, and several contests n most accurate shot, longest shot, etc. n with prizes awarded. “This will hopefully be a beginning to the Kaua‘i Youth Lacrosse Association, and to continuing relationships between youth lacrosse in Hawai‘i and Connecticut.
The clinic is free, but a donation will be asked for, the proceeds of which will go to help in the establishment of the Kaua‘i Youth Lacrosse Association, which will have its inaugural season starting in the spring of 2005.
In the summer of 2002, Mark Brown met with Stephanie Jones of the Wahine Club (Hawai‘i Women’s Lacrosse) to talk about the formation of youth lacrosse on O‘ahu. They started off with six kids and after the usual word of mouth advertising, posting flyers, and visiting local schools, that number grew to about 60.
Shortly after that, Rudie Schaefer got on board and brought his experience with youth lacrosse on Rhode Island, as well as his own personal lacrosse playing history.
With the help of Nick Masciangelo, and the Hawai‘i Lacrosse Club (men’s program), who donated time, money, and equipment, Hawaiian Islands Youth Lacrosse started in March of 2003 on O‘ahu.
