The KIF champion Kaua‘i High School boys volleyball squad ousted the Mililani High School Trojans last night, 31-29, 25-18 in first round action of the Nissan Boys State Volleyball Championships at Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i Campus on the Big Island.
The Red Raiders jump into quarterfinal action tonight at 8 p.m. against #2 seeded Waiakea.
A win tonight will put Kaua‘i in the state semis against the winner of #3 seeded Kalaheo and unseeded Kamehameha Schools-O‘ahu. That match will also start at 8 p.m.
The Red Raiders (8-0, 1-0 HHSAA) were led by KIF boys player of the year Futi Tavana with 11 kills and three aces. KIF all-star middle blocker Justin McSheehy pounded out seven kills and two blocks, followed by Micah Young with five kills and one block, KIF all-star outside hitter Kevin Downing with five kills and one block, Ryan Nagaoka with four kills and two blocks, KIF all-star setter Garrett Sakimae with two kills and one block, and Clesson Lee with two aces. Sakimae led the Red Raider attack with 29 assists and Downing along with Rikki Garma came away with nine and eight digs each.
Todd Sorbin and Chris Burt led Mililani with six kills a piece.
Meanwhile the Kaua‘i High School girls faced Kalani High School last night at 6:30 p.m., but the results weren’t available before press time. The girls bracket is pictured on the left.
A Kaua‘i win would put them in the quarterfinals against top-seeded Punahou tonight at 6:30 p.m.
