Christmas in a nutshell!
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
After today, there will only be two more days until Christmas, which means that the day you do the most shopping during the entire year is only one day away.
It’s true that most people try to wait until the last minute to get the final gift on that elusive and ever-growing Christmas shopping list.
I solved all of my problems a couple of nights ago, by making a trip to Wal-Mart and finishing off my list in just 10 minutes, yes 10 minutes!
I won’t tell you how I did it, because then I’d have to wait in line to get it because you’ll beat me to it. Gary Craig almost found out, but I decided to keep it a secret, but I could tell that he was finishing his Christmas shopping, because he was on his cell phone half the time, while in line, probably asking his wife Joni, what to get their daughter Tori for her stocking.
Christmas time also means that it’s getting close to the big blockbuster college football bowls.
I can’t wait to see the Orange Bowl on January 4, as number one USC takes on number 2 Oklahoma. I predict that it’s going to be one of the most exciting college football games we’ve ever seen. I mean, these two are as close in talent and coaching, as I’ve seen between two teams in a long time.
Either team who wins, will definitely deserve the national title.
But before the Orange Bowl, there are two other bowl games that are must see games for the people of Kaua‘i.
The first one is the Houston Bowl on Wednesday, December 29, as Texas-El Paso faces Colorado. The game will be televised on ESPN at 11:30 a.m. Hawai‘i time. Not only would it be good to see Waimea’s Jordon Dizon one more time this season, but it will also be good to see the ‘Buffs bash the Miners, who defeated the University of Hawai‘i in the regular season.
This game should be a barn burner. UTEP is 8-3 and Colorado is 7-5. Both squads are pleasant surprises to this year’s college football season.
Nobody expected UTEP or Colorado to even make it to a bowl game, so both teams will be at their best for the last time this season.
Dizon, a highly decorated freshman, has impressed the entire state of Hawai‘i, especially Kaua‘i with his feisty play on the field and his humble attitude off the playing surface.
Colorado has been on national television a few times this season and if you missed seeing Dizon and the ‘Buffs play, then you can’t let this last opportunity of the season slip away. Ok, that’s Wednesay, December 29 on ESPN, 11:30 a.m., Hawai‘i time.
The other game I was talking about is of course, the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl. It’s UH versus UAB (University of Alabama-Birmingham) this Friday on ESPN at 2 p.m., Hawai‘i time.
Put it this way, a few weeks ago, everyone was talking about how Hawai‘i blew its bowl chances and disappointed the state with its erratic play.
But after three straight wins, which included two over Big 10 teams, Michigan State and Northwestern, the talk of the town is how the Warriors climbed out of the coffin and walked down the aisle, because now everyone wants to be at their big day, the Hawai‘i Bowl.
But fellas don’t forget about your wives this holiday season. Make sure you take some time away from the couch and tv and with your favorite lady.
Oh and I know that there are lots of women who enjoy football too, so do the same for your husbands, and better yet, you could probably enjoy the game together and not just during the tv timeouts!
