KUKUI GROVE – The team of Rad Sam Fong, Brandon Thomas, Brad Smith, and K-Kai Seabury was the only team to “Beat the Pros” at the first Annual Beat the Pros Scramble played Sunday, Dec. 19 at the Puakea Golf Course.
The winning team finished with a gross 59, net 56.1 to edge out the pros’ gross score of 58 following a day of playing.
In addition to claiming the first prize, the winning team earned a special prize for beating the pros. On Jan. 28, the winning team will have the opportunity to bring their cars to the Puakea Golf Course for a custom hand-washing courtesy of the Puakea GC pros.
Second place in the tournament was shared between the teams of Nick Kuhlman, Pono Keohokapu, Kaima McCullum, Mark Morioka, and Bob Gianelli, Dale Eardmann, Larry Mata, and Stan Kua. Both teams finished with a 58.6.
Mike Sullivan, Dustin Gummerus, Billy Robinson, and Wayne Nakamura made up the fourth place team that closed at 60.4.
The event was designed to pit members of the Ha‘iupu Golf Club against the Golf Professional staff at Puakea in a net scramble tournament.
Men played off the white tees, ladies played from the red tees with the pros shooting from the tips.
The Puakea pro team was made up of Paul Ito, Pat Hunt, Kawika Oliver, and Matthew Mack.
“We played pretty well. In fact, during one stretch, we made 11 birdies in a row,” Head Professional Pat Hunt said. “We were lucky we only have to wash four cars.”
However, the winning team has some definite plans for the pros. “I’m not washing my car until the 28th,” said Rad Sam Fong. “And, I’m definitely going to Polihale a few times before then, to get it ready for the boys.”
