It was two years ago at the state track championships on Maui, where athletes from around the islands endured through the wet conditions, with every event finishing up except the pole vault contest.
Today, according to the National Weather Service, the same damp conditions are in store for the first-ever KIF meet on the newly rubberized Vidinha Stadium track.
But like the Maui track, Kaua’i’s crown jewel is equipped for the worst of elements.
“The track is made for the rain. Technically, it’s supposed to drain 20 minutes after the rain stops,” Waimea coach Dave Walker said.
Walker, who was on Maui two years ago, mentioned that there are ways to get around the rainy conditions.
“Everybody wore spiked shoes and you just have to adjust to the conditions,” Walker noted.
Each KIF school participating in track and field, has one day per week to practice at Vidinha Stadium.
“If this had been last year, we would be starting a week later,” Walker said.
As of last check from the National Weather Service, the forecast for this afternoon calls for mostly cloudy conditions with heavy showers.
The KIF’s first qualifying meet of the season is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Vidnha Stadium.
