Red Raiders nab a second-place finish

After a successful outing against Punahou II earlier this season, the Red Raider girls basketball team continued to improve with a second-place finish at the King Kekaulike

Na Wahine Basketball Classic, held on Maui, from March 2-5.

Head coach Dennis Aquino was very pleased with his team’s performance.

Kaua’i was one of eight teams in the field, with Rachel Taira and Ho’onani Dennis picking up all-tournament team honors.

The Red Raiders defeated St. Andrews in their first game, 43-29, thanks to nine points each from Cherisse Rapozo and Dennis.

Carie Inouye and Taira combined for 15 points.

Then Kaua’i dominated Kealakehe, 37-16, behind 12 points from Dennis, and Taira chipped in with 10 points.

Rapozo added six in the win. However, Kaua’i ran into some trouble against the BIIF’s Waiakea, who downed Kaua’i, 53-43.

Dennis and Taira led Kaua’i in the scoring department once again with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Inouye followed up with eight points in the loss. The KIF girls basketball regular season kicks off on March 28, with Kapa’a hosting Waimea.

The JV game starts at 5:30 p.m. and varsity action begins 20 minutes after the completion of the JV contest.
