Just as the rain continues to pound the island, the Red Raider golf team resumed their dominance on the course, with convincing wins in both the boys and girls matches, yesterday at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course.
Leading the way for the Red Raiders were Chad Nonaka (71) and Miki Ueoka (76), who scorched the rest of the field on their way to the top.
“He’s (Nonaka) just got a great short game and Miki shot a one-under-par on the front nine,” Kapa‘a coach Fred Levinthol said.
The two-time defending state champion Red Raider boys golf squad was without the services of the reigning boys individual state champion, Kellen Watabu, whose score wasn’t used for team standings.
Watabu, who competed in a state golf tournament on O‘ahu last week, was replaced by Micah Yoshioka, who shot a 77.
Both Nikko Tacsiat and Wiley Yoshioka paced Kaua‘i’s efforts with 76s.
Kaua‘i posted a team score of 300, which was followed up by Waimea’s 347 and Kapa‘a’s 360.
Noel Torres (79), Ryan Gusman (87), and Markland Soliva (88) led the Menehune.
Travis Toguchi (78), Bronzen Winters (87), and Jet Levinthol (89) were the Warrior leaders. Cyrus Ogawa put up Kula’s only score (79).
In the meantime, the Red Raider girls shot a combined team score of 260 and Kapa‘a placed second with a 368.
Besides Ueoka’s 76, Kaua‘i got solid play from Rae-Lyn Morikawa (90) and Kristi Rapozo (94).
Malia Saiki (96), Cheyene Barreto (134), and Kristin Jim (138) led the Warriors.
“The day started out really nice. It was a bit overcast with light winds towards the end of the day. Hopefully next week will be better,” Levinthol said.
KIF golf resumes on Saturday at the Princeville Makai Golf Course, starting at 11 a.m.
The postponed first match of the season, which was scheduled for March 11 at the Kaua‘i Lagoons Mokihana Golf Course was tentatively rescheduled for April 14.
