The Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association will host the first Kaua‘i Ocean Safety Awareness Conference this week.
The event is scheduled for Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort & Beach Club.
“Ocean safety for life, keeping Kaua‘i safe” is the theme for the conference.
A $25 registration fee to attend the conference includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
Various aspects of ocean safety and how it affects the visitor industry will be discussed by speakers from across the state including: Keith Cabral, resort beach and pool manager at the Mauna Kea Hotel on the Big Island; Dr. Monty Downs, emergency physician at Wilcox Hospital; and Ralph Goto, administrator of Ocean and Lifeguard Services for the City and County of Honolulu.
Other topics that will be covered at the conference include the future of Act 170 and Act 190 and also the newly updated Kaua‘i Explorer Web site.
“Our main purpose for having the conference is to reduce the number of drownings on Kaua‘i,” said Kalani Vierra, Ocean Safety Bureau supervisor, in a press release. “We want to educate people, especially those who work in the visitor industry, on how they can assist with promoting ocean safety within their businesses.”
