A couple attempting to outrun police, saddled with a stolen purse and a 1-year-old baby, attempted to escape by kayak up the Hanapepe River Monday morning.
They were apprehended at the Hanapepe Bridge, and the child was unhurt.
According to police, witnesses saw William Carlos, 28, and a juvenile female stealing a purse from a vehicle parked in a stall fronting the Nite Owl T-shirts store in Port Allen at around 8 a.m. and reported the incident to authorities.
When police arrived, Carlos and the juvenile fled on foot and hid in the bushes near the Hanapepe River mouth, according to a press release from Acting Chief Clayton Arinaga’s office.
As police converged on the area, the suspects stole a kayak from a nearby residence and attempted — unsuccessfully — to elude police by paddling up the river.
Firefighters and medics were also called to the scene as a precautionary measure to check on the child, who was with Carlos and the juvenile female throughout the incident.
The child did not sustain any injuries and was later released to a relative.
Carlos, who has no known address, and the juvenile were charged with unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and theft.
