Kaua‘i High School bowlers finished with two first places each for its boys and girls teams to sweep the Oct. 13 bowling matches.
The Red Raider men stumbled back from opening performances to win its final two games to take the day’s match with Kapa‘a close on their tail.
In the girls match, Kaua‘i snagged two first finishes in its opening matches before dropping to Waimea in Game 3. In overall pins, Kaua‘i garnered 2156 over Waimea’s 2022 with Kapa‘a finishing with 1802 pins and Island School getting 570 from two bowlers.
Kaua‘i boys dropped the opening match to Waimea by 30 pins, 731-701 before rebounding in games 2 and 3 with 757 and 755 performances. Overall, Kaua‘i finished with 2213 pins over Kapa‘a’s 2224 pins, Waimea’s 2036 pins and Island School’s 963 pins from three bowlers.
Kapa‘a men were right behind in all three games, rolling a 726 in Game 1 for second place below Waimea, and 750 and 748 in Games 2 and 3, respectively for second places in those games as well.
William Balbin had a strong showing Saturday as he paced both Raider men wins in Games 2 and 3 with rolls of 178 and 175, respectively. Previously, Balbin rolled a season-high 181 during last week’s outing.
Bryson Cabaileja, rolling a 175 in Kaua‘i’s third place showing in Game 1, added to Balbin’s lead with 161 and 164 games in the second and third games, respectively.
Micah Solusod was a solid No. 3 for Kaua‘i, charging out with a 166, dropping to a 148 second game before finishing with 163 in Game 3.
Matthew Haack bowled his season-best game for Waimea in Game 3, rolling a 203 before pacing the Menehune in its first place showing in Game 1 with a 167.
Following Haack in its Game 1 win, Jordan Sato rolled a 155 before dropping to a 123 and 126 showing in Games 2 and 3, respectively. Keith Nonaka (147, Game 1) and Nelson Acosta (142, Game 1) helped pace the Menehune men.
Troy Wong had the hot ball for Kapa‘a, rolling a 159 in Game 1 before soaring to a 191 in Game 2 and finishing at 155 in Game 3.
Wesley Abalos finished Game 1 at 153, dropped to a 131 in Game 2 before rebounding to his best game of the day, 166, in Game 3.
Ian Ramos rolled off to a 150 in Game 1, his best showing of the day before tapering off to 125 and 124 showings in games 2 and 3. Aaron Belmonte, starting with a 130, rolled Kapa‘a’s best score of the day at 199 in Game 2 before tapering off to 139 in Game 3.
Scott Emberson rolled the best score of the day for Island School at 151 in Game 2. Edwin Chow was the most consistent Voyager bowler at 119, 122, 128.
Wailana Borrero, the starting pitcher for the Raiders’ softball team, rolled the highest game of the day at 186 to pace Kaua‘i’s Game 1 win at 749 over Waimea’s 639 and Kapa‘a’s 562.
That roll was her season’s best, her next highest roll coming on Sept. 29 where she rolled a 167.
Kelsey Cadiente also rolled her season-best score in Game 1 with a 160 before dropping to 106 in Game 2, and not rolling Game 3. Her previous best score was a 158 rolled on Sept. 22.
Jessica Iwata rebounded from an opening 122 to finish with 154 in each of Game 2 and 3 for the No. 3 anchor position, Iwata’s Game 3 154 tying Kathleen Cadiente’s 154 to lead the Raiders in its 705 second-place showing in that game.
Kathleen Cadiente finished the day leading Kaua‘i in Game 2 as well, the Raider ladies finishing 49 over Waimea’s 639 and Kapa‘a’s 562.
Tiffany Lum rolled a strong 178 in the Menehune’s only first place finish of the day in Game 3. Earlier, Lum, whose best game was a 199 on Sept. 22, rolled a 144 and 166 in games 1 and 2, respectively.
Menehune anchor Syanne Sagawa followed with a 177 in Game 3, consistent with her 154 and 178 performances in Games 1 and 2, respectively. Merchelle Rivera stepped in with a solid 148 in the No. 3 slot in Game 3 followed by Jennifer Pancho rolling a 131.
Mindi Agena continues to lead the Warrior wahine, her best game coming in Game 3 where she finished at 179. Agena was a leader for Kapa‘a in all three games, rolling a 136 to start, just a pin shy of fellow Warrior Joanna Chang’s 137. But Agena held the lead at 133 in Game 2, Chang dropping to 127 followed by Allison Chapel who finished at 126.
Michelle Woltmon(102-109-109) and Angela Choy (60-98-92) represented the Island School bowlers.
Saturday marks the final KIF bowling match for the season with the first ball rolling at 2 p.m. at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
