HONOLULU — Nine top British surfers will be hitting O‘ahu’s North Shore waves in Hawai‘i when the first group arrives here this weekend.
The group is part of the Hawai‘i Project, a part of Surf Solutions’ overall program of exposing Britain’s promising young surfers to world level challenges and top level surf coaching.
Headed up by coach Joel Gray and Assistant Coach Martin Connolly, the first group is scheduled to leave this weekend. Micheal Pellegrino, a strength coach, will also join the group.
“It is crucial that young British surfers are getting surf experience outside of the UK as much as possible if they are to reach the high aspirations that they have,” said Gray in a press release from Surfersvillage.
“Hawai‘i acts not only as a great eye-opener, but also a critical test against conditions and also world level peers. The program we are operating is one of intensive technical coaching interspersed with controlled big wave surf exposure.”
The group will be broken into two separate two-week trips to the Hawaiian Islands.
While in Hawai‘i, the Surf Solutions team will spend time getting involved in the Hawai‘i scene and making contacts for the future. Among the activities are acquiring custom shaped boards from Jeff Bushman, Wade Tokoro and John Carper.
The surfers are also scheduled to help with the North Shore Outdoor Circle group.
The Hawai‘i Project group is coinciding its trip to take in the first contests of the winter season.
Toby Donachie, Stuart Campbell, Lyndon Wake, Dane Hall, Josh Piper, Alex Baker, Luis Eyre, Tassy Swallow and Kathleen Spears are the surfers picked for the trip.
