Davis Kane of Maui broke a 19-year swim record established by a Kaua‘i swimmer at the Senior meet held on O‘ahu this weekend.
Swimming at the Veterans War Memorial swimming pool, Davis broke a record in the 50 Free with a 20.54 swim, edging out the 19-year record of 20.71 set on Mar. 10, 1988, by the late Corey Carroll of Waimea High and the University of Hawai‘i captain for four years.
According to Mokihana Aquatics coach Orlando Anaya, Carroll set the record during his freshman year at UH.
Anaya, in an e-mail, said Davis is on the Hawai‘i swim team and was born and raised on Maui, but has strong family connections with the Kane family in Hanama‘ulu.
“The Kane family have swimming in their blood for generations,” Anaya said in his e-mail. “Davis’ great-uncle Durgh Kane was so fast in his day that he had to go to Honolulu for competition.”
Anaya added that Davis’ dad, Dane Kane, made headlines for Kaua‘i High School in the late 1970s and early 1980s as both Durgh and Dane were top sprinters.
Carroll still has one record left in the Hawai‘i swimming record books, Anaya said. That is in the 100 Free that Carroll established in his last age group championships held on Mar. 24, 1987, where he was swimming as a senior at Waimea High School.
Carroll powered through the event at 45.88 to set the record for the Men 17-18 100 Free.
