World Boxing Council’s Welterweight Champion Floyd Mayweather will received a $20 million paycheck at the end of this month for stepping into the ring for another much-hyped match. But it’s not for a rematch between him and Oscar De La Hoya.
Mayweather will take on World Wrestling Entertainment’s “The Big Show” for “Wrestlemania XXIV” in Orlando, Fla.
Is he crazy? Or is he a savvy business man?
Many people know him for his smooth moves in the ring, but millions more people know him for his smooth dance moves from his stint on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
So, it’s no surprise that he’s out there, trying to get noticed. I can recall when he did an “Alone with Rome” segment on ESPN’s “Jim Rome is Burning” when he told Rome that he may be working with billionaire and owner of the Dallas Mavericks Mark Cuban on possible business ventures. It’s possible they became fast and furious best friends from meeting on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Since then, Mayweather’s practically been seen everywhere.
Now he’s agreed to fight the Big Show?
The Big Show, whose real name is Paul White, is 7 feet tall and weighs more than 400 pounds.
Mayweather stands at 5 feet, 8 inches and weighs around 150 pounds. The Big Show could toss him around the way wrestlers pick up those folding chairs. Someone or something of Mayweather’s weight is nothing for the Big Show.
How crazy is that to step into the ring, with a giant, for money?
When I think of the other side of the argument, maybe it’s not so crazy because everyone knows that wrestling is scripted and the match wouldn’t last that long.
That’s a big paycheck for a short amount of work, but still.
I asked a friend who is similar height if she would jump in the ring for $20 mill, and she said yes.
“I’ve been hurt before,” she said. “It’s not that bad. Plus, with all the money I’d get, I could pay for all the medical bills. That’s a lot of money. Who cares? You’d definitely get hurt, but you’ll recover.”
OK, I see her point. I’m still not sure I could do it.
Seriously though, I know Mayweather wants to be a household name everywhere, and this venue will reach a whole new group of fans. But does he really need the money or to do it this way?
I guess the answer is yes because it’s already received a lot of buzz and it’s a quick $20 mill.
At a press conference last week in New York, Mayweather decided he was going to make it a show by doing a his best Pacman Jones impression by making it rain in the crowd. (For those who aren’t familiar with the catch phrase “making it rain,” it refers to the time Jones was in a Las Vegas nightclub and made it rain by dropping thousands of dollars onto the dance floor.)
Mayweather nearly started a riot when he threw $100 bills into the crowd.
“I run Vegas and I run L.A. and I will run the WWE,” he told the crowd.
He forgot to say that he runs his mouth too much and that was running scared after his first encounter with the Big Show.
On Feb. 17, Mayweather sat ringside a WWE “No Way Out” match in which Mexican wrestler Rey Mysterio fought Edge. A beaten up Mysterio was tossed back into the ring by the Big Show and in attempt to divert the Big Show’s actions away from Mysterio, Mayweather jumped into the ring.
A fight ensued and the Big Show decided he was going to get on his knees to give Mayweather a fair shot.
He got more than that when he punched in the face, broke his nose and bolted for the nearest exit.
That, of course, started the ordeal.
Sorry Mayweather, you don’t run anything. Not Vegas. Not L.A. and you will definitely not rule the WWE. How is he supposed to pin down someone who is more than twice his weight?
But, you may just run the table on how to cash in your name? Like I said, it is an easy way to make $20 mill.
So, I guess my answer to “is he crazy,” or “a savvy businessman,” is that’s it’s the latter.
That much money for little work, but maybe a broken arm? Smart.
Not to mention that after this, I’m sure more million-dollar deals will come.
