The Kapa‘a High School’s Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls crew teams finished second place in yesterday’s First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Canoe Paddling Championships at Ke‘ehi Lagoon.
The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions who swept all the major events on Kaua‘i went on to advance through all the preliminaries at Ke‘ehi Lagoon yesterday to make it into the finals. Paddling a distance longer than the distances for the KIF, the Warriors were able to hold their own against some of Hawai‘i’s bigger schools.
The Varsity Boys crew finished with a time of 3:47.82 to finish behind Kalaheo High School of O‘ahu. Kalaheo finished with a time of 3:43.21 for the first-place finish.
For Kapa‘a’s Varsity Girls crew, they finished behind the Buff’nBlue of Punahou School with a time of 4:26.73
The race was a close one with Punahou beating Kapa‘a with a time of 4:26.53.
Over at the Blaisdell Arena, Daniel Quinlan won two of his bouts yesterday in the HHSAA State Wrestling Championships.
Quinlan, out of ‘Ele‘ele but wrestles for Lahainaluna School, went into the championships with the No. 2 seed for the 152-pound weight class and had the first-match bye. Quinlan defeated Kamehameha Schools Kapalama’s Keola Knight to advance to the quarterfinals.
There, he defeated Rikki Rutt of Pearl City High School and has advanced to the semifinals where he will face Nicholas Chambers of ‘Aeia High School.
The champions in all weight classes will be named tonight.
